Blackpool Sands Takeaway Under New Partnership

news from one of the uk’s most iconic beaches

Blackpool Sands Takeaway has opened (April 1) with spectacular sea-views and the most delicious food on a menu that’s committed to sustainability, with a focus on Devon producers.

Imagine enjoying daily landed fish and chips that are gluten free, curried monkfish scampi, LA Style smashburgers, southern fried chicken burgers, a bucket of crispy chicken wings or a Dartmouth crab sandwich. Vegans and vegetarians are well served and kids have their own menu too.

For later in the day, it’s worth having a long walk along the shoreline to enable guilt-free eating of incredible food that’s been carefully sourced by the venue’s new head chef Grant Holloway, who said “Our menus showcase the best of what Devon has to offer with seasonality and sustainability a key theme. Our offering is inspired by the sea using the best local produce sourced from passionate suppliers. Everything is ethically sourced with traceability and accountability.”

One of those suppliers is Devon-based Farm Wilder which provides meat from farmers who use regenerative farming practices, working in harmony with the environment to benefit animals, farmers, consumers and wildlife. Co-founder Luke Dale Harris said, “Farm Wilder is really excited to be working with Blackpool Sands and for our wildlife friendly, generativity farmed beef to be on their menu. With the takeaway overlooking the beach and sea and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty behind, we love it that the chef and owners have put sustainable management of marine and terrestrial ecosystems at the centre of their menu design.”

There’s also an excellent drinks menu, including ethically sourced coffee from Voyager at Buckfastleigh, ales and beers from Bays in Torbay and eco-friendly Sea Change wines, whose founder Tom McAllister said “We’re delighted to support Blackpool Sands with our award-winning wines, including alcohol free and semi-sparkling.”

He goes on to say, “Our aluminium cans are 100% recyclable. The paper for the labels comes from certified sustainable forests and is made partially from grape waste and every bottle of Sea Change wine helps fund ocean conservation projects. With Blackpool Sands’ emphasis on sustainability and the environment, we’re delighted to be a part of their exciting plans for this summer and beyond.”

Blackpool Sands is privately owned by the Newman family who have joined forces with Dartmouth hoteliers Charlie and Zuzana Deuchar to create this new and exciting eating experience with its waste minimal approach to menu planning, and a commitment to supporting smaller producers who want to reduce their impact on the planet.

The takeaway’s location is widely regarded as one of the most idyllic in the UK, indeed Blackpool Sands was recently voted the UK’s best beach by Conde Nast Traveller, and the care of the local environment has always spearheaded activities.

Head chef, Grant, said “It is all about the food we will be creating at Blackpool Sands Takeaway, which is a precursor for a new restaurant that will open early in 2024. The food we create is a reflection of the amazing larder we are lucky enough to call home – South Devon.”

Blackpool Sands Takeaway will also be entirely plastic and glass free. The new takeaway will open every day 9am to 5pm, with extended hours during the summer season and live music on the first Saturday morning of every month.

Breakfast is served from 9am until 11am and the lunch menu from noon. Simply turn up with a beach chair, eat at one of the permanent picnic tables, take a seat in the temporary indoor area, or grab a blanket and enjoy the views on the beach.
