Announcement of New Exhibitions at Dartmouth Museum

Thomas Newcomen & David hulse

This summer, Dartmouth Museum will be opening their new Thomas Newcomen and David Hulse Exhibitions, where visitors will be able to explore how Dartmouth was the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, featuring models of Newcomen’s 1712 Steam Engine and later developments.

Son of Dartmouth, Thomas Newcomen powered the Industrial Revolution with his invention of the World’s first atmospheric steam engine in 1712. Little did he realise at that time just how his invention would change the world. The Museum dedicated exhibition to this famous Dartmouth man and tells his story, which includes a special film about his life.

The second exhibition displays a lifetimes work from engineer David Hulse, who, inspired by Thomas Newcomen’s atmospheric steam engines, spent 45 years building a collection of 1/16th scale working steam engine models. This now World famous collection has been the subject of numerous documentaries by film makers from all over the World.

This amazing collection of nine miniature steam engine models is being donated to Dartmouth Museum and you can see the new exhibitions in early August.
